The roles

Piper Alderman is looking for a number of ambitious and hard-working law students to take on law clerk roles in our Sydney CBD office.

You will be given the opportunity to do real legal work from the get-go, in a supportive and collaborative learning environment which encourages you to balance and blend your university commitments with work experience. Our Law Clerk positions are ongoing in nature while you complete your degree, working a minimum of two days per week. You will see the opportunity to immerse yourself in interesting, thought-provoking tasks such as legal research for current matters, drafting correspondence and legal documents, attendance and note taking at client meetings, gathering and analysing case facts and collating documents for counsel briefing and court hearings.

There are available positions in four (4) practice areas:

Up to three (3) roles working with the Firm’s National General Counsel based in Sydney which require high level research and writing capabilities, a zest for developing technical knowledge and experience in multiple areas of law, (both litigious and non-litigious) plus gain exposures in legal regulatory environments and risk management.

Up to three (3) roles in Commercial Litigation which require an interest in high level litigation and an aptitude for development of skills commensurate with being a career focused committed litigator;

Two (2) roles in the Class Actions Group which require a keen interest in complex litigation funded matters and working across each matter always in a team environment; and

Two (2) roles in wholly non-litigation practice areas of Employment Relations (1 role) and Projects, Infrastructure & Construction (1 role). Candidates should have a strong interest in these particular fields and a genuine desire to build and progress a career within these specialties.

To succeed in these roles you will ideally have:

  1. Demonstrated academic excellence in tertiary studies to a minimum circa Credit Average;
  2. Completed (or be close to completing) one half of required law studies by end of Semester 1, 2026 or Term 2, 2026;
  3. Thorough research skills and a superior attention to detail;
  4. Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  5. An ability to demonstrate initiative and take a proactive approach to solving problems;
  6. Tracking to complete all law studies so you will graduate not before December, 2026 nor later than July, 2028; and
  7. Current enrolment in your 2nd – 5th year of legal studies.

NB When applying, indicate which roles in up to three (3) of the above practice areas in order of preference that you are interested in.
