Associate / Senior Associate – Retail Banking & Financial Services
Build Expertise. Work with Leading Clients. Become a Specialist.
We are seeking a talented and ambitious lawyer who wants to build a career with us in retail banking and financial services law over the long term.
This is an opportunity for someone who is prepared to invest in developing genuine expertise in a complex and evolving area of practice that bridges the gap between law, risk management and business practice.
We are looking for someone who is committed to excellence, takes pride in producing high-quality work and is motivated by the prospect of becoming an expert in their field.
Why financial services?
The financial services industry is constantly evolving in response to regulatory change, technological innovation and changing consumer expectations.
The result is intellectually challenging work that rarely stands still and rewards lawyers who enjoy continuous learning. Lawyers who develop genuine expertise in this sector become trusted advisers to major institutions and are highly sought after throughout their careers.
Why This Opportunity Is Different
You will work directly with partners who have been advising on the development and implementation of Australia's banking and financial services regulatory framework for more than 30 years.
Over that time, they have advised clients on many of the major regulatory reforms that have shaped the industry and continue to advise on emerging legislative and regulatory change. This means you will gain first-hand insight not only into the law as it currently stands, but also into how regulatory policy is developed, interpreted and implemented in practice.
You will work on matters that are typically associated with top-tier financial services practices, while benefiting from direct access to experienced partners and meaningful responsibility much earlier in your career.
Our clients include banks, credit unions and other regulated financial institutions that rely on us for advice on complex regulatory obligations, strategic projects and business-critical issues.
Our practice is deliberately focused on developing deep subject matter expertise. We care deeply about the quality of our work and the quality of our advice. We value curiosity, sound judgement, commercial awareness and a genuine commitment to excellence.
For a lawyer who wants to become a recognised specialist in this area, there are few better ways to accelerate that journey than learning directly from practitioners who have been involved in the evolution of the sector itself.
About the Role
You will work closely with experienced practitioners on a broad range of matters involving banks, credit unions and other regulated financial institutions.
Your work may include:
- Consumer and commercial lending matters
- Financial services regulation and compliance
- Product development and distribution arrangements
- Customer complaints and internal and external dispute resolution
- Regulatory change and implementation projects
- Financial institution mergers, acquisitions and integrations
- Risk management and governance matters, and
- Commercial contracts and advisory work.
You will have direct exposure to clients from an early stage and will be encouraged to participate in meetings, contribute to advice and develop your commercial understanding of the sector.
From the outset, you will be trusted with meaningful work and encouraged to take ownership of matters, develop your judgement and contribute to client outcomes.
As your experience grows, so too will your responsibility and exposure to increasingly complex and significant matters.
What Success Looks Like
Within your first 12 months, you will:
- Develop a strong understanding of the regulatory framework governing retail banking and financial services
- Build confidence in advising on a broad range of regulatory and commercial issues
- Take ownership of discrete workstreams and matters, and
- Develop the foundations of a specialist practice that will continue to grow throughout your career.
About you
We anticipate the successful candidate will have approximately 3–6 years' post-admission experience, although we are more interested in aptitude, attitude and potential than a particular number of years in practice.
You may already have experience in banking, financial services or regulatory law, but it is not required. We welcome applications from lawyers with a general commercial background who are genuinely interested in specialising in this area.
The successful candidate will likely be someone who:
- Is intellectually curious and eager to develop deep technical expertise
- Produces careful, accurate and detail-oriented work
- Enjoys solving complex legal and regulatory problems
- Has strong drafting, analytical and communication skills
- Takes ownership of their professional development
- Is resilient, hardworking and committed to delivering excellent work
- Builds strong relationships with clients and colleagues, and
- Is motivated to build a long-term career in retail banking and financial services law.
If you this sounds like you and you are prepared to invest in becoming truly excellent at what you do, we would like to hear from you.
